Mission 28 was assigned to TRAPPIST-1g, a distant exoplanet located approximately 40.66 light-years from Earth within the famous TRAPPIST-1 planetary system.

Although remote observations suggested a cold but potentially habitable environment, ESO scientists could not fully determine the planet's true surface conditions from orbit alone.

As with several previous expeditions, veteran astronaut and military specialist David Morgan was selected as the sole surface explorer.
