Mission Archive #23 documents one of the most unusual planetary expeditions ever recorded by the ESO Exploratory Space Organization, humanity's most experienced deep-space exploration agency.
For decades, ESO has carried out repeated landings on potentially habitable exoplanets across nearby star systems. Numerous alien ecosystems, unfamiliar vegetation, and massive extraterrestrial animals have already been documented during previous missions.
Mission 23 targeted GJ 1002 c, a rocky exoplanet located approximately 15.8 light-years from Earth. Earlier astronomical observations suggested that the planet could possess a stable atmosphere and environmental conditions favorable for exploration.
Veteran astronaut and ESO military explorer David Morgan was assigned once again as the sole surface operative. Having completed numerous successful planetary landings alone, Morgan was considered the organization's most qualified field explorer for hostile alien environments.

The initial exploration covered nearly six kilometers from the landing site.

Ice.

The creature resembled an enormous terrestrial hermit crab, although its anatomy differed dramatically from any known Earth species.
Its shell appeared ancient and heavily covered by compacted snow and thick layers of ice accumulated over many years.
Instead of conventional walking legs, the animal possessed numerous thick tentacle-like limbs resembling those of an octopus.
Unlike soft cephalopod arms found on Earth, these limbs appeared heavily armored and rigid, allowing the creature to move steadily across solid ice.
Its body length was estimated to rival that of large dinosaur species previously known from Earth's fossil record.
Every movement caused subtle vibrations throughout the surrounding frozen terrain.

Mission Control later concluded that the organism likely occupied the highest ecological niche on GJ 1002 c.
Without vegetation visible on the surface, scientists proposed that the creature may obtain nutrients from microbial ecosystems hidden beneath the planet's deep ice layers or from marine environments trapped under the frozen crust.
The shell itself displayed unusual mineral growth unlike calcium-based structures found in Earth's crustaceans.
Several sections reflected sunlight with metallic blue coloration, suggesting the shell continuously absorbed frozen minerals from the surrounding environment.
No aggressive behavior was recorded throughout the encounter.
David maintained observation distance while autonomous drones captured high-resolution imagery for later biological analysis.

The discovery confirmed that even a planet appearing completely lifeless from orbit could still support enormous extraterrestrial organisms.
